Messages from the Headteacher and Chair of the Governing Board

I have today announced to the Governing Board of the school my intention to retire next year - at the end of the academic year 2021-22. This has not been an easy decision, as it will bring to a close a 39-year career in special education. It had always been my ambition to teach in a special school and I have been very lucky to have been able to do that all through my working life. I now feel that I should step aside and allow the school to further develop.

I joined St Nicholas as Deputy Head in 1995 and then became Headteacher in 1999. My extensive time at St Nicholas has been the highlight of my career and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and am very proud of the school I will be leaving.

When I arrived it was a much smaller school, both in numbers of pupils and buildings, and through the last twenty plus years it has grown and developed into the flourishing vibrant community it is now. I have been very fortunate to have worked with excellent colleagues and had very supportive governing bodies and parents throughout my time here. I will cherish all my memories of the wonderful children, staff and parents I have had the good fortune to meet. I know I leave the school in a strong position to meet the challenges of the future.

The Governing Board have immediately set in place plans to find a replacement for me and they will be supported in this by the Local Authority. I will support the process and do my upmost to ensure a smooth transition for my successor.

Daniel Lewis

Daniel’s announcement of his retirement is an important event in the life of the school.  After so many years of excellent and dedicated service to St Nicholas School and the lives of generations of children, he will leave a pair of very big shoes to fill.  I and my fellow governors do not underestimate the importance of the task ahead of us to find a top quality successor capable of building on Daniel’s work and taking the school into the future.

Governors are very grateful to Daniel for giving us 12 months notice of his departure, time enough in which to recruit the new Headteacher and organise a transition process ready for them to take charge of St Nicholas in September 2022.

I shall make sure that you are kept informed of developments as we take forward the recruitment and selection process.
